Ayan is a five-year-old who loves being outdoors and playing with his friends, but getting around independently is difficult because of his complex health needs.
Ayan is unable to walk and has a number of conditions that require ongoing care. He has fluid on his brain, which is managed with a shunt, as well as significant bowel and bladder issues. He also has heart and kidney conditions that make his health particularly fragile.
For Ayan and his family, specialist equipment can make everyday activities more accessible. It can also come with a significant cost, which is not always easy for families to meet.
Helping Ayan stay active
Despite the challenges he faces, Ayan is an active little boy who loves being outside.
With support from Yorkshire Children’s Charity, his family was able to receive an individual grant towards a specialist trike.
The trike gives Ayan a way to get outside and be active while having the support he needs to move around safely. It also means he can join his friends when they are playing outdoors, rather than having to watch from the side.
For Ayan, having the right equipment opens up more opportunities to play, explore and spend time with other children.
Caring for a child with additional needs can bring extra costs, from specialist equipment to adaptations and other practical essentials. Our individual grants are designed to help families access equipment that can make daily life easier for children living with sickness or disability.
For Ayan, his specialist trike is helping him get outside, stay active and enjoy time with his friends.
