Noah's story

Noah’s garden was difficult to access with his wheelchair, limiting the time he could spend outdoors with his family.

With support from Yorkshire Children’s Charity, his garden was adapted to create a safe, accessible space, giving Noah more opportunities to play, explore and enjoy time outside with his family.

For 15-year-old Noah, getting outside and spending time with his family is an important part of everyday life.

Noah has PURA syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects every part of his daily life. He is unable to walk or communicate verbally and uses a wheelchair full-time, relying on others for his personal care and support.

Noah is a happy and sociable teenager who loves going for walks, visiting the beach, swimming with his carers and spending time in the garden with his family. As Noah uses a wheelchair full-time, having a garden he could safely access was important. Changes to the garden would give him more opportunities to spend time outside, play and enjoy activities with his family.

Making the garden accessible

With support from Yorkshire Children’s Charity, we were able to provide £2,000 towards adapting Noah’s garden.

The garden now has paving suitable for Noah’s wheelchair, as well as space for a summer house provided through a family fund. Areas for sand and water play give Noah different ways to play and explore, while a shaded area provides somewhere for him to take a break during warmer weather.

The changes mean Noah can now spend more time in the garden with his family. They can have meals outside, play together and share everyday family moments in a space that works for everyone.

For Noah, having a garden he can access means he can make the most of being outdoors and enjoy more time doing something he loves, surrounded by the people closest to him.
